Kayoko Ueda, an independent, obliging and inquisitive woman in her mid-thirties, born in Japan and living in Vancouver, Canada for most of her life, feels more Canadian than Japanese. Trained as a psychologist she marries Mitchell, a forest manager.
They move from Vancouver to Oregon where Mitchell manages a Japanese-owned wood mill and Kayoko becomes his PA and secretary. After three years their son Alwin is born whom they both adore.
On an autumn Sunday the family drives off to San Francisco for a company meeting about its wood mills. They turn left close to Mt Shasta, for a lunch break. At a T-junction they are involved in a serious car accident that changes Kayoko’s life…
